Ian Crawford, an astronomer at London, England’s, University College, recently published a paper which argues that the laws of physics allow the kinds of things seen in Star Trek — faster-than-light transit through space wormholes or by the use of warp drives. “The proofs are complex and mathematical, but more and more astrophysicists are satisfied that in theory it is possible,” he says. But Simon Mitton, spokesman for the British Astronomical Society, said people should be skeptical: “It is quite important to realize that when learned societies publish a paper of any sort, the publication of the paper does not imply the collective endorsement of the entire society,” he sniffed.
