I have some truly wonderful readers out there.
One of them, upon getting a copy of my book This Is True: Deputy Kills Man With Hammer, which is the first True book collection with 500 stories and headlines from this weekly column, plus nearly 100 more stories and headlines we didn't have room for once the word limit was reached -- said it was much better and of higher quality than he expected, and added that therefore, I wasn't doing a good job of communicating to people why they should buy a copy. He offered to try to do a better job, and I said OK.
So here's what reader Caroline says are some better reasons:
The book really helps you in five real-life ways:
1. MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD. Reading this book brings you the gift of laughter. It puts you in a better, more relaxed mood, contributes to your physical and mental health. Sure, you've read most of these stories, but that was months ago and you have probably forgotten many of them by now...in fact, you probably can't remember all the stories from last week.
2. NON-TOXIC SLEEPING PILL? It's an ideal bedside companion. Humor relaxes you, helps you sleep better. Of course such a use is somewhat humbling to the author, but then I think of the people who spend their whole lives making toilet paper....
3. BATHROOM COMPANION! Put a copy in every bathroom. Half the world likes to read something in the bathroom, and this is an easy book to read for a few seconds or a few minutes. For more intellectual visitors, use Kant's "Critique Of Pure Reason" in addition to our book.
4. WARD OFF SLEAZY SEAT COMPANIONS. Read it on the plane or in waiting rooms to avoid unwanted chatter from others. Just point to the book, say "Let's talk after I finish the book." If that doesn't keep your seat-companion quiet, try hitting the jerk with the book.
5. IT'S A GREAT GIFT -- people of all kinds and ages will appreciate it. It's hard to find a valuable, all-occasion, non-pornographic $11 gift these days, and during the next 12 months you will be looking for several such gifts for friends, family, business associates and customers. Get the extra copies now so you'll have them when you need them. Remember, it's always the last-minute purchases which cost three times what you wanted to spend -- and those are usually lousy gifts anyway.
