Nearly a quarter of all public telephones in Sabah, on Borneo Island, have been stolen, but Telekom Malaysia officials couldn’t figure out why. “Even our telephone manufacturer in Italy was baffled by the thefts,” a Telekom spokesman said. An investigation has now revealed why: local fishermen have discovered that when connected to batteries and lowered into the water, the telephone handsets emit a sound which attract fish to their nets.
