John Bushey, executive director of school leadership for School District 11 in Colorado Springs, Colo., is under fire for pressuring schools to get pupils to buy more Coca-Cola. “Allow students to purchase and consume vended products throughout the day,” Bushey wrote in a letter to district school principals.”If soda products are not allowed in classes, consider allowing juices, teas and waters” that are also sold in the machines. The district’s contract with the soft drink giant requires the district to sell at least 70,000 cases of soft drinks in a year or risk losing cash incentives from Coke. Last year’s sales were a mere 21,000 cases, but that’s not why Bushey was pushing the sugar water. “My intent... was to improve education here,” he claims.
