A 13-year-old boy in Ponder, Texas, assigned to write a “Halloween horror story” for school, followed the instructions well. The boy’s mother said he got an “A” on the essay, plus extra credit for reading it aloud to his class. The unnamed student’s one-paragraph, misspelling-laden essay tells of a haunted house where “I busted out with a 12 guage [sic] and Ismael busted out with 9 mm” and shot two classmates trying to scare them — and “I acssedently [sic] shot Mrs. Henry,” the teacher. School officials found the essay “disturbing” and called police, who came to the school and arrested the boy. He remained in custody charged with “making terroristic threats” for five days, until bad publicity forced county officials to drop the charge and release him.
