A joint study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Service Hospitalier Frederic Joliot in France has found that math computation tasks are spread among different parts of the brain, rather than centered in one special calculation area. Using brain imaging, they found that approximations are processed by the part of the brain involved in visual, spatial and analogical processes, but rote arithmetic, such as memorizing multiplication tables, takes place in the brain area responsible for verbal tasks.
