Britain's Department for International Development has issued a report that calls for “more compelling” television news coverage of developing countries because viewers are “turned off” by a constant stream of Third World “disasters, bizarre events or visits by prominent westerners.” This leaves people with a serious problem with the “understanding of development issues,” says the report, Viewing the World. (Reuters) ...Yes, to find it interesting we need Third World news to match First World news: stories on sex scandals, spoiled celebrities, 20-year-old dotcom multimillionaires and street crime would be a good start — just like what we send them.
