Hiding in Plain Sight

Elmer Edward Solly, 55, escaped from prison in New Jersey in 1974 where he was serving a 15- to 20-year sentence for beating his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son to death. For the last several years Solly, living as Daniel “Danny C” Catalano, has lived in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla, where he told people he was the former lead singer of the oldies “greaser” rock group Sha Na Na. He was so convincing that he was booked for nostalgia shows by promoter Scott Robbins. “The guy came in, he did a good show,” Robbins said. “He had the jewelry and the Sha Na Na jacket.” He had more than that: Catalano had a promotional web site filled with details about his fake persona. “What kind of idiot puts up a web site?” Robbins asked.
