The Kingdom of Swaziland has not executed a prisoner since 1984, but it now has eight convicts on death row. Unfortunately, they no longer have a hangman. “We used to use a rotational hangman that we shared with Botswana and Lesotho, but now we want to have our own,” says Minister of Justice Maweni Simelane. When they advertised that the position was open, the Ministry got applications from several countries. “A couple of weeks ago, two local women came to see me on this issue,” the minister added. A rigorous interview process will screen the applicants. “If they face problems with their conscience, we’ll find ourselves looking for another candidate,” he said, though he refused to say what salary would be paid.
