It’s expensive to die in Bucharest. A local newspaper advises readers to “bring your own gravediggers and save money.” Fees for digging a burial plot can easily reach 70,000 lei (US$35) — more than many Romanians can afford. But one city official denied people can bring their own shovels. “We don’t let amateurs dig graves in our cemeteries,” he sniffed.
