A positive outlook on life may be your enemy as you age, according to new research by the University of Pennsylvania. Contrary to conventional wisdom, pessimism may be the best defense against depression. Optimists, the year-long study found, were less able to cope with bad news about their health or the death of a friend, and thus suffered more depression than pessimists.
