Cistercian monks living on Caldey, a small island off Wales, have broken their vow of silence — in television commercials. The brothers fund their abbey with cash brought in by tourists, but a recent oil spill has killed off the tourist trade. They tried to sell some of their prize cattle, but couldn’t because of the mad-cow ban. So it’s on to TV with ads trying to lure the tourists back. “We have a strict rule of silence,” Brother Robert says, “but we also have to live in the modern world.” (Reuters) ...Why?
