With funeral costs so expensive, many figured “do it yourself” shops would do well selling discounted products. Not so, they’re finding. Caskets Direct to You of Framingham, Mass., has gone out of business after selling just one coffin in 18 months. Jim St. George, the founder, president and chief executive officer of Consumer Caskets USA in Erie, Pa., says his company has not made a profit yet either. “The major problem is that nobody gets up on a Saturday morning and says Let’s go casket shopping’,” he said.
