No Accident

The town of Castle Rock, Colo., is miffed at the Douglas County Sheriff Office’s new policy of refusing to provide the identification of accident victims to fire department ambulance crews. The ambulance service, which is funded by the victims’ health insurance, says the new policy is hurting their efficiency. Too bad, says the sheriff: the victims have privacy rights that deputies must protect. On the other hand, “accident information is made public after our investigation is completed, so it’s not that hard to get,” a sheriff’s spokesman says. That means that medics must now go to the sheriff’s office to get the info — and the service is not exempt from paying the $5 fee. (Denver Rocky Mountain News) ...Of course not: that’s the only source of income for the sheriff’s donut fund.
