When Carl Reese carjacked a Lexus in Coral Springs, Fla., he stuffed the car’s owner, Paul Brite, in the trunk at gunpoint and drove off. Then, he thought, what if there was a portable phone in that trunk that the victim could use to call for help? Reese pulled over and opened the trunk to check. Brite didn’t have a phone stored in the trunk, but he did have two guns there. “He ordered the suspect several times to lie on the ground, firing two warning shots,” a police spokesman said.
