Police Story

The New York, N.Y., Police Department says tourists are increasingly trying to take advantage of the system by filing false reports of being robbed in order to collect on travel insurance. Visitors are coming in with tall tales — and are increasingly being charged with filing false police reports, which is punishable by $1,000 fines and up to four years in prison. One tourist told the cops he was “robbed in broad daylight surrounded by hundreds of people,” says Capt. James O’Neill of the Central Park Precinct. That report “really had cops rolling their eyes.” One thing that tips officers off, he says, is that tourists “give us a Hollywood version. Something corny, like the perp said, Stick ’em up’. Nobody says that anymore.” (AP) ...You mean cops still say “perp”?
