A study published in the American Journal of Sociology finds that teenagers age 16 to 17 who make a public vow to abstain from premarital sex did delay sex by an average of 18 months longer than their vow-free peers. “Our findings surprised us because we didn’t expect to see any effect from these pledges, but it was just the opposite,” said study lead Peter Bearman of New York’s Columbia University.
