  Bias? You be the Judge

Anytime This is True runs stories with (shall we say) controversial subjects, it generates letters. But nothing brings more letters than the division between left- and right-wing politics! Some of the people who read the column on President Clinton's White House Intern 'Fornigate Scandal' thought Randy was unfairly biased. (One, from Arizona, said Randy was a "fascist right-wing conspirator" and a "Christian Coalition prevericator (sic)"! Oh, my! How quickly they forget!)

We get much more mail from conservatives ranting about supposed left-wing bias than the other way around! (The difference, though, seems to be that liberals' emotions get out of control, leading to name-calling, while conservatives tend to do the tsk tsk tsk thing, telling Randy he'll go to hell if he doesn't shape up.) So, in the interest of fair play (since the Clinton piece is posted on this web site), and in the spirit of the "Republican Response" speeches that the media carries after a speech made by our Democratic president, we offer:

Rants and Raves over "Austin Powers"

First, let's start with the story that started it all (in the 18 July 1999 issue):

Hey, Doll! Push My Button! II

When Tamantha Brannon was shopping at an Atlanta, Ga., Toys 'R' Us store, her 11-year-old son Marvin picked up an "Austin Powers" doll and pushed its talk button. "Do I make you horny, baby? Do I?" the doll demanded. When Marvin asked her what "horny" meant, Brannon was so angry that she has filed a criminal obscenity complaint with county prosecutors. "This is not acceptable," Brannon said. "My son is not old enough to be talking about sex." Clayton County Solicitor Keith Martin is looking into the complaint, but isn't rushing to press any charges. "I don't know who we would even prosecute," he said. (AFP ...Start with Ms Brannon.

  Featured in Playboy Again?

If you made it to this page after reading about This is True in Playboy, you've at least proven that you do read the articles! This is True is the thinking person's humor publication, just as Playboy might be considered the thinking person's men's magazine. We humbly believe Playboy agrees, since we've now been featured in their pages four times (no pictures, thankfully).

You'd Be Proud Too (a.k.a. "Billy Club")

We can relate. No, not to genital giganticism, but rather to the unsmiling corporate response to parody. In our case, it was Hasbro, with our Get Out of Hell Free cards. Surely the BeProud folks will be happy to hear that our stick was big enough to beat back the corporate types (read: we used our high priced lawyer). But with this, they'll have a good fight ahead of them. From True's 20 January 2002 issue:

The Argument Every Man Has Been Looking For

Sometimes I think of a funnier tagline after I publish an issue. Sometimes I think of a funnier tagline before I publish it, but I don't use it -- usually because it's just too nasty. This is one of those cases, so if you don't like crude, you've been warned. Otherwise, on with the story, from the 21 July 2002 column:

Perk Up

Researchers at the State University of New York have found that women who are exposed to semen absorb hormones from the fluid which help ease depression and make them feel good. Condoms block that exposure, says study lead Gordon Gallup, but "Clearly an unwanted pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease would more than offset any advantageous psychological effects." The study says that semen provides the mood-enhancing effect "regardless of how [women] are exposed to it." (Reuters) ...Coming soon from the Coca-Cola company....

  Saaya Irie Photos

Saaya Melts Hearts -- But May Break Yours

A photo is "worth 1000 words," so yes, we've got the photos (below). But usually you need some words to put the photos in context. Before exhibiting any lust, be sure to note the girl's age! From True's 22 May 2005 issue:

Why My Job is So Fun

I have the best job in the world. Or, at least, it's in the Top Ten! Sometimes, though, my format constrains me a bit: for instance, I don't consider university newspapers to be "mainstream", and they thus are not eligible sources for This is True stories. Still, when I come across a really good one, it's very tempting. In this case, it was too tempting: I simply had to write up the story. But even if I did, there's no way I could include it in the e-mail newsletter: it would trip far too many spam filters. The result: this page!
