Why My Job is So Fun

I have the best job in the world. Or, at least, it's in the Top Ten! Sometimes, though, my format constrains me a bit: for instance, I don't consider university newspapers to be "mainstream", and they thus are not eligible sources for This is True stories. Still, when I come across a really good one, it's very tempting. In this case, it was too tempting: I simply had to write up the story. But even if I did, there's no way I could include it in the e-mail newsletter: it would trip far too many spam filters. The result: this page!

Sometimes I think of a funnier tagline after I publish an issue. Sometimes I think of a funnier tagline before I publish it, but I don't use it -- usually because it's just too nasty. This is one of those cases, so if you don't like crude, you've been warned. Otherwise, on with the story, from the 21 July 2002 column:

We can relate. No, not to genital giganticism, but rather to the unsmiling corporate response to parody. In our case, it was Hasbro, with our Get Out of Hell Free cards. Surely the BeProud folks will be happy to hear that our stick was big enough to beat back the corporate types (read: we used our high priced lawyer). But with this, they'll have a good fight ahead of them. From True's 20 January 2002 issue:

Featured in Playboy Again?

If you made it to this page after reading about This is True in Playboy, you've at least proven that you do read the articles! This is True is the thinking person's humor publication, just as Playboy might be considered the thinking person's men's magazine. We humbly believe Playboy agrees, since This is True and/or Randy Cassingham have now been featured in their pages <strike>four</strike> <strike>five</strike> six times (no pictures, thankfully).

Rants and Raves over "Austin Powers"

First, let's start with the story that started it all (in the 18 July 1999 issue):

Hey, Doll! Push My Button! II

When Tamantha Brannon was shopping at an Atlanta, Ga., Toys 'R' Us store, her 11-year-old son Marvin picked up an "Austin Powers" doll and pushed its talk button. "Do I make you horny, baby? Do I?" the doll demanded. When Marvin asked her what "horny" meant, Brannon was so angry that she has filed a criminal obscenity complaint with county prosecutors. "This is not acceptable," Brannon said. "My son is not old enough to be talking about sex." Clayton County Solicitor Keith Martin is looking into the complaint, but isn't rushing to press any charges. "I don't know who we would even prosecute," he said. (AFP ...Start with Ms Brannon.
