A new video technology developed at the University of Wisconsin may help the blind to see. The “tongue display unit” is — yes — mounted on the user’s tongue, and emits small electrical currents to transmit images from a video camera. After about 50 hours of practice, test subjects learned to correctly navigate a maze. “It was just amazing,” said one woman who tried it. “Just by feeling it on my tongue, my brain got the message where to go.” Developers say it will be at least five years before the system can be commercialized.
