Undercover agent “Source Albert” was proving to be a boon to the BND — the German Federal Intelligence Service. He was bringing in all sorts of documents about the former Soviet Union that were proving to be authentic, so the BND paid him $138,000 for his services. Then the BND realized their source: the documents were all copies of its existing files, provided to Source Albert by an accomplice inside the organization. He has been sentenced to 2-1/2 years in prison and a $9,200 fine, and ordered to return the money he was paid. His inside connection was sentenced to 4-1/2 years.
