Stalked by the Fans

Soccer spectators of the Second Division club Gillingham in England have been told that they will be banned from the stands for life if they are caught with celery. Apparently, the celery is a prop for a popular fan song, and is thrown in the air when they get to a particular lyric. “We had incidents over a number of matches,” the club’s safety officer said. “They sang the song and then threw it up in the air,” and the goalkeeper was hit with some of the tossed veggie. “We estimate there must have been boxes of it in the air,” the safety man said. “There is a safety implication here.” The goalkeeper, however, didn’t appear to be bothered. “Perhaps if they threw lasagna, I might take more notice,” goalie Jim Stannard said.
