Tall Tale

Author Erich Segal has quashed reports that Vice President Al Gore was the model for the male character in his 1970 best-seller, Love Story. Gore told reporters he was the model for the book, written by fellow Harvard University student Segal. But Segal, reacting to the reports, says it’s not true: Oliver Barrett IV was based on actor Tommy Lee Jones, who also went to Harvard. A Gore spokeswoman said Gore “never misspoke” in making the claim, but “he may have been misheard.” (RC/AFP) ...Right. Segal actually said Gore was the model for Forrest Gump.
Author’s Note: Gore’s hit parade continued when he claimed he “created the Internet” — see Volume 5.
