Researchers from the school of medicine at Japan’s Hokkaido University say as many as one in 10 people under age 35 are suffering from memory loss because they depend too much on computers, electronic organizers, automotive navigation systems and other devices. “They’re losing the ability to remember new things, to pull out old data or to distinguish between important and unimportant information,” says Prof. Toshiyuki Sawaguchi. “It’s a type of brain dysfunction. Young people today are becoming stupid.” British researchers agree. “Everyday memory might be at threat if you are using the computer as a kind of external memory,” says Prof. Pam Briggs of Northumbria University in Newcastle.
