California researchers say chocolate contains a chemical that mimics the effects of marijuana, which may explain its “addictive” qualities. Anandamide, present in chocolate but not in similar foods, such as coffee, is the likely culprit. “Canniboid drugs are known to heighten sensitivity and produce euphoria,” they wrote in the journal Nature. “A possible effect of elevated brain anandamide levels could be to intensify the sensory properties of chocolate thought to be essential to craving.” (Reuters) ...All this, and no “munchies” afterward.
