Edmund Donoghue, the medical examiner in Cook County, Ill., is under fire for classifying too many deaths as “heat-related” in a nationwide wave of hot weather. Because of their liberal labeling of deaths as heat-related, the number of Chicago-area victims has been put well into the hundreds — at least half of the national toll. “There’s no uniform federal definition for heat-related deaths,” confirmed a spokeswoman for the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — it’s up to the medical examiners to choose how to classify deaths. “We’re confident that we’re going to be upheld on this,” Donoghue said in a press conference.
