You Can’t Touch This

City officials in Lafayette, Ind., are trying to figure out what to do about Kim Mattes. An exotic dancer, Mattes practices her routines in her front yard. For two years, neighbors have seethed, but now that she’s installed a 10-foot pole in the yard, the display is really starting to get attention. “Law enforcement people indicate that she’s just right on the fine line of crossing over into probably what’s deemed public indecency,” says Tippecanoe County Commissioner John Knochel. “She knows the law. When law enforcement officers have been out there before she’s quoted it to them, so she’s very aware of what she’s doing.” Officers can’t help but notice her: her house is across the street from an Indiana State Police office.
