The migration of people from Thailand’s coconut plantations to better-paying jobs in the city has left a shortage of workers to climb the trees to harvest the crop. Pigtail monkeys have been trained to take their place. A recent competition showed that a monkey can climb a tree, select eight ripe nuts, pick them, and drop them to the ground in just 34 seconds. It has been estimated that 1,200 monkeys now work in southern Thailand’s coconut plantations. (Reuters) ...However, the rumor that Bill Gates has 1,200 monkeys working at 1,200 terminals to produce "Windows 96" is just that: a rumor.
